Michael Owen has been looking ahead to Monday night’s game at the Emirates.

Newcastle United travel looking to get the extra few points that would rubber stamp Premier League safety.

Whilst Arsenal are in a two from four for the last two Champions League places, the Gunners currently fourth with 60 points, one behind Spurs but two and three points ahead of Man Utd and Chelsea respectively.

Back in September, Newcastle were a little unlucky to lose 2-1, Arsenal scoring with their only two efforts on target. Rafa’s team having 10 corners to only 4 for the visitors, Ciaran Clark getting the consolation goal.

Michael Owen refers to Arsenal having won their last six home games against Newcastle averaging three goals a game. That stat is true but then you can often do a lot with stats. That takes in the crazy 7-3 game of December 2012 and also the 4-1 game in 2014, since then there have been two clashes at the Emirates and they were narrow 1-0 wins for the Gunners over the Magpies.

Owen also points out the stat that Arsenal have won their last nine Premier League home matches and this one is difficult to argue with. I didn’t realise how different their home and away form had been 41 points at home and only 19 away. Only Manchester City have picked up more points at home than Arsenal, whilst in the PL top 10 only West Ham picked up less points away.

In fact away from home, Arsenal have only beaten the three teams in the relegation zone, Newcastle and Bournemouth.

This Arsenal run of nine PL home wins in a row has included victories over Spurs, Chelsea and Man Utd. In contrast, in this same time period they have only beaten Huddersfield away from home, with three draws and four defeats, including against Southampton and West Ham.

Newcastle have picked themselves up after a dreadful start to the season and in the last 22 games have lost only seven.

Away from home Rafa’s team have only lost six of fifteen matches and apart from the last one at West Ham, the other five have all been against the top six teams, with  Arsenal to come…

Newcastle can take heart though at only 20 goals conceded (12 scored) in these 15 away games and that apart from a bad one at Anfield, the other four away games to top six teams have all been defeats by a single goal.

Michael Owen goes for a prediction of Arsenal to be leading at half-time and full-time. That could well be the case but there can still be real optimism that Newcastle can get something, especially with a better goal threat now. Not exactly prolific but 15 goals in the last 9 PL matches is a marked improvement on only 16 in the opening 22 games.

Michael Owen talking to BetVictor:

“Arsenal have won their last six home PL games with Newcastle and averaged three goals a game in that sequence.

“United showed with their late equaliser at Bournemouth in their last match that they do not lack in passion or commitment.

“But the Gunners are one of only three sides with a perfect home league record in 2019 and have won their last nine PL games at the Emirates.

“Tip: Arsenal halftime/fulltime at 11/10.”
