Flurry of bets see odds slashed on Rafa Benitez being named new Celtic manager
The countdown continues on Rafa Benitez.
Only 46 days until Newcastle travel to Fulham, the final match of Rafa’s current three year contract.
After that, who knows?
Wednesday has seen a major shift in betting odds concerning the Spaniard.
On Tuesday night he was priced at 20/1 to be Celtic manager when the 2019/20 season kicks off.
A flurry of bets has seen that price slashed.
The betting at Ladbrokes currently shows:
10/11 Neil Lennon
4/1 Roberto Martinez
5/1 Rafa Benitez
6/1 Marco Rose
7/1 David Moyes
I wrote something last week (see below) when I was told about rumours that Rafa Benitez could be the next Celtic manager.
I still can’t believe that he would drop down to that level.
However, until we see some end game to what is happening with his position at Newcastle United, the rumours are bound to increase, whether it is Celtic or a more likely potential club that fits his profile.

Interesting to hear increasing chatter north of the border that Rafa Benitez could move to Celtic in the summer.
Not sure where this all started but I was up in Glasgow this week and Celtic supporters I was speaking to, are clearly thinking/hoping this could have some substance.
There are bits and pieces appearing in the media (see below) but surely it is just wishful thinking on their part?
The clock is ticking down and now only 52 days until Newcastle play their last game of Rafa’s current contract, so obviously speculation on the manager’s future is going to increase by the day.
However, I just can’t see any way that Rafa Benitez would be stepping down to that level.
The level of most clubs/players is Championship/League One and Celtic are walking the league each season.
The suggestion that European football might tempt Rafa Benitez is something I just can’t see, Even if Celtic got into the Champions League group stages the level of players Rafa could sign is so low that trying to compete is all but impossible at European level.
Whilst many people find it difficult to identify exactly which jobs would be an ideal fit if Mike Ashley does force him out of Newcastle, Rafa Benitez has recently said that if he is having to look for another club, he doesn’t rule out that club being on the continent, even though his family are still based in north west England.
Obviously the only sensible thing that should happen is that Mike Ashley should sell Newcastle United, or allow Rafa Benitez the backing and freedom to run the club properly. Sadly, I find that about as likely to happen at the minute as I do Rafa ending up at Celtic.

He’s been around a bit, and is out of contract in the summer.

Whatever comes of this, it means that there is a bid to bring someone else in for next season. A surprisingly mature way of doing things for Celtic , which also means that they have plans for Lennon, possibly as some sort of ambassador.

It is no secret that Benitez isn’t happy at Newcastle. He has constantly been at odds with owner Mike Ashley. This is particularly the case when it comes to transfers.
That means that the Hoops would not have to pay compensation to the Premier League side should they approach Benitez.
It would be a huge coup to get a manager of his class to Scotland, far bigger than the appointment of Brendan Rodgers.
Benitez has won the Champions League, and trophies in England and Spain. He would instantly become the best manager in Scotland.
It would be a dream appointment, and Celtic should go about making that dream a reality.’
