Eduardo Berizzo comes to the defence of Miguel Almiron after shocker of a challenge

Miguel Almiron has made headlines for all the wrong reasons on Wednesday morning.

Last night in the neutral venue of Santa Clara (USA) the Newcastle striker started on the bench for Paraguay.

Paraguay Coach Eduardo Berizzo saw his side go three down to Mexico in the opening 24 minutes and early in the second-half, Miguel Almiron was sent on to try and help get Paraguay back into the game, or at the very least make the scoreline less embarrassing.

After quickly helping Paraguay pull a goal back, Almiron was then sent off only seven minutes after being introduced, after a horror challenge from behind, his studs going into the back of an opponent’s knee.

An instant red card an 10 man Paraguay went on to lose the game 4-2 in his absence.

After the game Eduardo Berizzo was quick to defend the Newcastle striker and insisted that ‘The last thing that would have been in the mind of Miguel Almiron was to hurt Vazquez.’

To be fair, Miguel Almiron had only been sent off once previously in his career and that was for Lanus in Argentina, plus it was for two yellow cards back in December 2015, rather than a straight red when playing his club football in Argentina. So it does look very out of character.

Former Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao manager is already feeling the pressure, taking over as Paraguay boss only last month, he has now lost his first two games to Peru (1-0) and Paraguay (4-2).

Berizzo will be looking to Miguel Almiron as one of the player to help get things on an upward trajectory, after his suspension…

Eduardo Berizzo actually spoke specifically about the importance of Almiron before last night’s game:

“Miguel Almiron showed his talent in MLS and that allowed him to go to a strong league like the Premier League.

“Miguel Almiron is a footballing leader for Paraguay.

“I hope he keeps up his form and can become as important to Newcastle as he was at Atlanta.”

Newcastle United internationals:

Miguel Almiron played the full 90 minutes on Friday when Paraguay lost a friendly 1-0 to Peru.
